I’m Doug Alexander. I live in Brattleboro, Vermont, where I’ve been doing residential renovation and general contracting work for most of my adult life. I grew up outside Northampton, Massachusetts, and made my way up Route 9 to Vermont in my late twenties. That was thirty-some years ago.
I’ve been winding down the contracting work over the past couple of years. I still take the occasional job for people I’ve worked with a long time, but I’m mostly done taking on new clients. Thirty years of other people’s houses is enough.
This site is somewhere to put things I’ve figured out over those years — what works, what doesn’t, what most homeowners don’t know about their own houses until something breaks. I’ll also write about whatever’s happening in the shop when it’s worth documenting, and about New England when I end up somewhere worth writing about.
I get down to Rhode Island a few times a year. I’ve been to most of the places worth going along the coast between here and the Cape. Some of that ends up here too.
